History

The Foster family of Lanwithan House gave the land on which the school stands in the early 19th Century, and as early as 1818, we learn that St Winnow School existed on this site, founded originally for the poor of the Parish to be educated within the principles and practices of the Church of England. As the buildings were makeshift, funds were raised by subscription to build a new schoolroom in 1850.

Junior and Infant classes were added in the 1890’s. Outdoor toilet facilities were rebuilt in 1987. The annex was completed in 1990 and was used as a gym when the hall was being used as a classroom. Renovation work was completed in 1994 and has transformed the school completely, providing two new classrooms, a larger infant classroom, indoor toilet facilities for children, a staff room, a new servery and a hall which no longer doubles up as a classroom. In the summer of 1999 toilets were added to the annex and in September 2000 it was opened as our fourth class for the Foundation Year children.

The Foster family continued to take interest in the school up until 1967 when Miss Loveday Foster died. She had been a governor and benefactor for many years.
